Literary Terms and Genres হলো ইংরেজি সাহিত্য (English Literature)–এর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দুটি অংশ।
1. Literary Terms
Literary Terms বলতে সাহিত্যে ব্যবহৃত বিশেষ শব্দ, ধারণা বা কৌশলকে বোঝায়, যেগুলো দিয়ে সাহিত্যিক রচনা বিশ্লেষণ করা হয়।
উদাহরণ:
Metaphor – রূপক
Simile – উপমা
Irony – ব্যঙ্গ বা বিপরীত অর্থ
Alliteration – অনুপ্রাস
Personification – মানবিক রূপদান
অর্থাৎ, লেখক তার লেখাকে সুন্দর ও অর্থবহ করার জন্য যে কৌশল বা অলংকার ব্যবহার করেন, সেগুলোই Literary Terms।
2. Genres
Genres বলতে সাহিত্যের ধরন বা শ্রেণি বোঝায়।
উদাহরণ:
Poetry – কবিতা
Drama – নাটক
Novel – উপন্যাস
Short Story – ছোটগল্প
Essay – প্রবন্ধ
অর্থাৎ, সাহিত্যকে যে বিভিন্ন বিভাগ বা ধরণে ভাগ করা হয়, সেগুলোই Genres।

Epic [মহাকাব্য)]:
(i) Epic means a long narrative poem that tells in grand style the history and aspirations of a national hero.
(ii) A long narrative poem dealing with heroic theme and adventure. (সুদীর্ঘ রোমাঞ্চকর কাহিনীকাব্য, মহাকাব্য)।
There are two types of epic:
(1) Primary or Oral epic:
A Primary epic is a type of epic with which the epic tradition began. In a primary epic the episodes taken from the oral tradition are linked with one another to make a longer story.
Examples: Homer's Iliad and Odyssey are primary epics.
(2) Secondary or Literary epic:
The Secondary or Literary epic is the one which imitated the tradition of the primary epic. A primary epic displays savage and rude heroism but a sec-ondary epic shows a more refined taste.
Examples: Virgil's Aeneid, Dante's Divine Comedy and Milton's Paradise Lost are secondary epics.

Simile:
দুটি ভিন্নধর্মী জিনিসের মধ্যে As বা like দ্বারা তুলনা বোঝালে তাকে Simile বলে। (The comparison of unlike things using the words like or as is known to be simile)
i) My heart is like a singing bird
ii) He is as cunning as a fox.
iii) I wandered lonely as a cloud.
iv) The soul was like a star dwelt apart
v) Our soldiers are as brave as lions.
Metaphor:
যদি কোন বাক্যে দুটি জিনিসসের মধ্যে তুলনা বোঝায় তাহলে Metaphor বসে। Metaphor এর সাথে as, such, like থাকে না।
[ a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.]
i) Life is but a walking shadow. [ জীবন একটি চলমান ছায়া মাত্র]
ii) My brother was boiling mad. (This implies he was too angry.)
iii) The assignment was a breeze. (This implies that the assignment was not difficult.)
iv) Revenge is a kind of wild justice
v) He is the only hope of his family
vi) "She is all states, and all princes, I."
vii) "Shall I Compare Thee to a summer's Day".
viii) All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances
Note: একই জাতীয় বস্তুর/বিষয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা হলে Metaphor হবে না। যেমন- Nazrul is Shelly- এখানে দুই'জনই ব্যক্তি বা একই বৈশিষ্ট্যের, তাই Metaphor হবে না। কিন্তু যদি বলি-Life is a dream- এখানে- life এবং Dream শব্দ দুটি একই বৈশিষ্ট্যের নয়, তাই তুলনাটি Metaphor হবে।

Alliteration (অনুপ্রাস) : The repetition of beginning consonant sound is called alliteration (যখন পরস্পর সম্পর্কযুক্ত বা পাশাপাশি স্থাপিত শব্দের শুরুতে একই বর্ণ বা একই ধরনের উচ্চারণ থাকে, তাকে অনুপ্রাস বলে)
i) Birds of the same feather flock together (এখানে শব্দ দুটির শুরুতে 'F' Repeat হয়েছে, তাই এটি But a better butter makes a batter better.
ii) She sells sea shells on the sea shore; The shells that she sells are sea shells I'm sure.
iii) Chompa is chewing a chewing gum of cherry by sitting on a charming chair.
Alliteration- এর প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্যগুলো হচ্ছে:
একই রকম বর্ণ অথবা শব্দাংশ কিংবা উচ্চারণের পুনরাবৃত্তি ঘটবে। এই পুনরাবৃত্তি, শব্দের প্রথম দিকে থাকে। শব্দগুলো হয় পর্যায়ক্রমিক না হয় প্রায় পর্যায়ক্রমিক।
Climax (চরমসীমা/চূড়ান্ত পর্যায়): কাহিনী বা নাটকের চরম পরিনতিকে Climax বলে।
Climax হচ্ছে কোনো নাটক বা গল্পের সর্বোচ্চ অবস্থা বা turning point যেখানে ঘটনার বৃদ্ধি শেষ হয় আর ঘটনার পতন শুরু হয়। সুতরাং Climax happens at the height of a plot. . It is the turning point. In play it is a point of time at which the conflict between opposites reaches a point demanding resolution.
(i) "Veni, vidi, vici" ("I came; I saw; I conquered") এটি 'climax' এর উদাহরণ এখানে importance of idea গুলো এখানে আস্তে আস্তে বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। This is an example of sentence climax.
(ii) "He smiles, he laughs and he roars". The climax is at the end of the sentence.
Personification (ব্যক্তরূপে প্রকাশ) : The technique of treating non-living things as humans is called personification (নির্জীব বস্তুকে মানুষ হিসেবে বিবেচনা করার কৌশলকে ব্যক্তিরূপে প্রকাশ বলে।
Examples:
- Mr. Pneumonia was not a polite old gentleman. [এখানে Pneumonia কে ব্যক্তিরূপে কল্পনা করা হয়েছে।]
- Death lays his icy hand on kings.
- The fog comes on little cat feet.
Hyperbole [অতিরঞ্জন/ অতিশয়োক্তি]: কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে তার উপযুক্ত অবস্থানের চেয়ে অতিরঞ্জনের মাধ্যমে অতি গুরুত্ব প্রদান করাকে বা বিত্মারিতভাবে বর্ণনা করাকে Hyperbole (অতিরঞ্জন) বলে (বিষয়টি আসলে কোন কিছু সম্পর্কে বাড়িয়ে চলা/ চাপাবাজি করা)। এখানে কোনো কিছুকে overstatement করা হয়। Hyperbole (exaggeration or "hype) is figure in which a deliberate overstatement is made for emphasis.
Examples:
(i)Ten thousand saw I at a glance. এখানে অতিরঞ্জন করা হয়েছে কারণ, I at a glance কেউ Ten thousand গণনা করতে পারে না।
ii) He is 900 year old.
iii) I have told you a million times.
iv) I ate the whole cow.
v) I am so hungry that I could eat a cow.
vi) Another example comes from the poem "As I Walked Out One Evening" by W.H. Auden:
"I'll love you, dear, I'll love you till China and Africa meet,
And the river jumps over the mountain
And the salmon sing in the street,
I'll love you till the ocean
Is folded and hung up to dry
And the seven stars go squawking
Like geese about the sky."
vii) I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers
Could not with all their quantity of love
Make up my sum.
Limerick (মজাদার ছড়া):
(i) A funny poem of five lines called limerick.
(ii) Limerick (কৌতুকপূর্ণ পঞ্চপদী ছড়া/কবিতা): A Form of light verse (পাঁচ লাইনের হাস্য-রসাত্মক কবিতা/ ছড়াকে Limerick বলে।
It is a humorous verse of three long and two short lines rhyming aabba. The third and fourth lines are usually shorter than the other three.

There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, 'It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!

Soliloquy (স্বগতোক্তি):
(i)A dramatic technique of speaking alone to give characters own thoughts and feelings. (নাটকের মঞ্চে কোন চরিত্রের এককী কথোপকথনের মাধ্যমে নিজস্ব ভাবনা এবং অনুভূতি প্রকাশের একটি কৌশল।
(ii) A monologue by a character talking to himself with no listener around, (নাটকে যখন কোন চরিত্র নিজেই নিজের সাথে কথা বলে তখন তাকে Soliloquy বলে।)
Examples:
(i)To be or not to be, That is the question
(ii)"Yet art thou still but Faustus and a man" [In the first soliloquy of Doctor Faustus]
Blank Verse (অমিত্রাক্ষার ছন্দ): যে কবিতার শেষে ছন্দ থাকে না তাকে Blank verse বলে। Poetry without rhyme at the end. (যে কবিতার অত্মমিল নেই) Blank verse poetry has no fixed number of lines.
Examples:
Something there is that doesn't love a wall.
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun; (Mending Walls by Robert Frost)
Elegy (শোকগাথা কবিতা): যে কবিতায় দুঃখ, অনুতাপ এবং বেদনা প্রকাশ করে তাকে Elegy-শোকগাথা কবিতা বলে; (It is a poem of Lamentation and Mourning)

Sonnet
সনেট হচ্ছে চৌদ্দ লাইনের কবিতা। এই ধরনের কবিতা দুটি ভাগে বিভক্ত থাকে। প্রথম আট লাইনকে বলে Octave এবং শেষ ছয় লাইনকে বলে Sestet. সাধারণত প্রথম আট লাইনে কোন Theme বা Problem থাকে এবং শেষের ছয় লাইনে একটি সমাধান থাকে।
সনেট তিন প্রকার-
- Italian or Petrarchan sonnet
- Shakespearean or English sonnet
- Spenserian sonnet
Shakespeare মোট 154 টি সনেট লিখেছিলেন। ধারণা করা হয় তার সনেটগুলো তিনজনকে উদ্দেশ্য করে লেখা-
- The Young Friend [The Earl of Southampton]
- The Dark Lady 3. The Rival Poet [may be Marlowe or Chapman]
তার সনেটগুলোর নামকরণ এভাবে হয়েছে-Sonnet-1 থেকে Sonnet-154,
যেমন- - Sonnet 18
"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate."
উপরের লাইন দুটি এই সনেটের শুরুতে লেখা হয়েছে। কবি তার বন্ধুকে উদ্দেশ্য করে বলেন আমি কি তোমার সৌন্দর্যকে গ্রীষ্মের সুন্দর দিনগুলোর সাথে তুলনা করব? কিন্তু পরক্ষণেই বলেন না তা করব না কেননা গ্রীষ্মের সৌন্দর্যতো কিছুদিন পরেই চলে যায়; আর তোমার সৌন্দর্য চিরস্থায়ী।
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see So long lives this, and this gives life to thee."
এই লাইন দুটি দিয়ে সনেটটি শেষ হয়েছে। শেকসপিয়র বলেন-যত দিন মানুষ বেচে থাকবে এবং আমার এই কবিতা পড়বে ততদিন তুমি ও তোমার সৌন্দর্য এই পৃথিবীতে জীবিত থাকবে। এখানে তিনি বলেন-সেই ভালোবাসা কোনো ভালোবাসাই নয় যেটা অন্য আরেকজনকে পেলে পরিবর্তত হয়। সত্যিকার ভালোবাসার কখনো পরিবর্তন হয়না। সত্য ভালোবাসা চিরস্থায়ী।
A true lover does not change even when the beloved person had changed somewhat. True love is permanent.

Comedy Play (হাস্যরসাত্মক নাটক): যে নাটকের মধ্যে কোন বিশেষ বিষয়কে আনন্দের মাধ্যমে উপস্থাপন করা হয় তাকে কমেডি নাটক বলে, এ নাটকের উদ্দেশ্য হলো দর্শককে আনন্দ দান। (A play that shows terrible things in a way that is intended to be funny that is called comedy play).

Tragedy play (বিয়োগাত্মক নাটক): যে নাটকের সমাপ্তি হয় দুঃখের মধ্য দিয়ে তাকে ট্রাজেডি নাটক বলে। (A play that shows a tragic/ a sad ending).

Melodrama play (আবেগপ্রধান নাটক): যে নাটকে মূল বিষয় থাকে উত্তেজনাকর ও আবেগপ্রধান (Violent and Sensational themes) তাকে মেলোড্রামা নাটক বলে।

Protagonist (নাটকের মূখ্যচরিত্র): নাটকে অভিনয়ের মূখ্য/প্রধান চরিত্রকে Protagonist বলে । The leading character in a play.
Homonyms: (সমম্বর): Spelling এবং Pronunciation (উচ্চারণ) এক কিন্তু আলাদা অর্থ প্রকাশ করে এমন শব্দকে Homonyms বলে। যেমন: You are right. (সঠিক) Look at your right (ডানদিকের) side.
Homophones: (সমোচ্চারিত ভিন্নার্থক শব্দ): A word may sound the same as another but is different in spelling, meaning or origin is called homophones (একটা শব্দ অন্য একটা শব্দের মত উচ্চারিত হলেও বানান, অর্থ বা বুৎপত্তিগত দিক থেকে ভিন্ন হতে পারে। এ ধরনের শব্দকে বলা হয় সমোচ্চারিত ভিন্নার্থক শব্দ।
Example: 'Write', 'right', or, 'knew' and 'new' are homophones.
Monologue (স্বগতোক্তি): এক ব্যক্তির নিজস্ব উক্তি, লিখা অথবা সম্পাদন করা। Speech or writing produced, and often performed, by one person.
Diction (শব্দ চয়ন): সাহিত্যের প্রয়োজনে বিভিন্ন দুর্লভ শব্দ ব্যবহার করাকেই ডিকশন বলে। The choice of words that a writer makes. Another term for vocabulary or lexis, although less used these days.
Free verse (মুক্তক ছন্দ): গঠন, নিয়ম, ধারাবাহিকতা ইত্যাদি না মেনেই ছন্দ তৈরী করে কবিতা লিখ। verse written without any fixed structure (either in meter, rhyme or form).
Satire (ব্যঙ্গ রচনা) J. swift এর Gulliver's Travel এবং George Orwell এর Animal Farm এগুলো ব্যাঙ্গাত্মক রচনা।

Tragedy: A form of drama which presents the downfall of a noble man or a superior man for some error in judgment, weakness in character. (বিচারিক ত্রুটি বা চারিত্রিক দুর্বলতার কারণে যে নাটক শেষ হয় প্রধান চরিত্রের পতনের মাধ্যমে।

Revenge Tragedy: A kind of tragedy that involves a quest for vengeance (প্রতিশোধ)। (প্রতিশোধমূলক ট্রাজেডি)।
Machiavellian Character: a scheming person/ Cunning person/ selfish per-son. (নাটকে ব্যক্তি স্বার্থ হাসিলকারী/ চতুর চরিত্র)।
Digression: To divert from the main topic. (প্রধন থিম থেকে সরে যাওয়া)।
Eulogy: Expressing high praise of somebody. (অতিরিক্ত প্রশংসা করা)।

Onomatopoeia (অনুকার শব্দ): A word that phonetically imitates, resembles or suggests the source of the sound that it describes. Example-miaow, roar, cuckoo etc. (এক ধরণের শব্দ যা কোন প্রাণী বা কোন কিছুর আওয়াজ থেকে উৎপন্ন হয়)। A figure of speech in which the sound of words and phrases suggests the sense.
For example:
- "Chug, chug, chug. Puff, puff, puff. Ding-dong, ding-dong. The little train rumbled over the tracks."("Watty Piper" [Arnold Munk], The Little Engine That Could)
- "Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is." (Slogan of Alka Seltzer, U.S.)
- The buzzing bee flew away.
- The sack fell into the river with a splash.
- The books fell on the table with a loud thump.
- He looked at the roaring sky.
- The rustling leaves kept me awake.
- The sheep went, “Baa.”
- The best part about music class is that you can bang on the drum.
- It is not unusual for a dog to bark when visitors arrive.
Allegory (রূপক কাহিনী): কোন গল্প বা কাহিনী যেখানে কল্পনা করে কিছু বলা হয়। A story or a narrative, জন বুনয়ান (John Bunyan) এর 'The pilgrim's progress' একটি allegory.
Euphemism (শ্রুতিকটু পদের পরিবর্তে কোমলতর পদের প্রয়োগ)
A figure of speech which stands for a pleasant way of referring to some-thing unpleasant. (কোন অস্বস্থিকর বা সত্যিকার শব্দের পরিবর্তে অন্য কোন সুন্দর শব্দের ব্যবহারকে Euphemism বলে। যেমন: 'মৃত্যু' শব্দের পরিবর্তে 'পরলোক গমন 'ব্যবহার) The substitution of an inoffensive expression for one considered offensively explicit,
Euphemism Examples in Everyday Life
Euphemism is frequently used in everyday life.
You are becoming a little thin on top (bald).
i) Our teacher is in the family way (pregnant).
ii) He is always tired and emotional (drunk).
iii) We do not hire mentally challenged (stupid) people.
iv) He is a special child (disabled or retarded).
Paradox (আপাত বিরোধী হলেও সত্য): A statement where contradictory things come together.
Examples of Paradox:
- Cowards die many times before their deaths.
- Your enemy's friend is your enemy.
- I am nobody.
- "What a pity that youth must be wasted on the young." - George Bernard Shaw
- Truth is honey which is bitter.
- "I can resist anything but temptation." – Oscar Wilde
- There is no one so poor as a wealthy miser.
Oxymoron: পাশাপাশ দুটি বিপরীত শব্দ থাকলে Oxymoron হবে।
- She is irregularly regular.
- He is an honest rogue.
- It is a painful pleasure.

Pun (শ্লেষালঙ্কার/দ্ব্যর্থক শব্দ প্রয়োগ):
A play on words, sometimes on different senses of the same word and sometimes on the similar sense or sound of different words. A pun is a joke that makes a play on words. A pun, also called paronomasia, uses words that have several meanings or words that sound similar but have different meanings.
সাহিত্যে Pun এর উদাহরণ:
- A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion.The
- flock of doves decided to stage a coo.
- Peacocks are meticulous because they show attention to de tail.
- The duck said to the bartender, ‘put it on my bill.’
- When a vulture flies, he takes carrion luggage.
- Energizer Bunny arrested charged with battery.
Epilogue (এপিলগ) বা উপসংহার হলো একটি বই, নাটক, সিনেমা বা গল্পের একেবারে শেষে যুক্ত করা বিশেষ অংশ, যা মূল কাহিনীর পরিসমাপ্তি ঘটায়। এটি সাধারণত কাহিনীর সময়ের চেয়ে কিছুটা ভবিষ্যতের ঘটনা বর্ণনা করে, চরিত্রের ভাগ্য কী হলো তা জানায়, অসম্পূর্ণ দিকগুলো পূর্ণ করে এবং পাঠককে একটি সন্তোষজনক সমাপ্তি উপহার দেয় ।
Ballad (গীতি কবিতা): আনন্দদায়ক গান/ কবিতাকে Ballad বলে। (Romantic pop song is called ballad).
Dirge (ডাজ-শোকসঙ্গীত): যে গান দুঃখ, অনুতাপ এবং বেদনা প্রকাশ করে তাকে Dirge/শোকসঙ্গীত বলে; (A song expressing grief, lamentation and mourning).
